I should have blogged during the trip like Heidi because I’m having a hard time getting through all the pictures now and remembering what happened. At least I can use Heidi’s posts as a reminder!
Day 4
We took BART to the Mission District. We spent most of the morning at Mission Dolores.

We had delicious lunch at Tartine (although they had a major shortage of seating.) Thanks for the recommendation, caroline!
After some more transit drama we made it across town and did some shopping in Japantown. I got some adorable patterned masking tape, that’s very popular right now and for a great price.

Then we took another long bus ride to Cliff House for dinner. I was nervous about getting sick again the whole trip so I just got some French Onion Soup (very yummy.) Good thing too because the prices there are insane. We did get some complimentary hot chocolate that rocked our socks off. The views are spectacular and maybe even worth the prices for food. We got these photos from inside because it was windy and SO cold outside!

Day 5
This was my favorite day of the trip! We decided, since we had such a fun time doing one in NYC, that we should do a movie sights tour. Our tour guide, Wylie was great. The cutest family from Australia was sitting behind us. I loved the kids trying to pronounce Wylie!
Our first stop was St. Peter and Paul Church and Washington Square Park seen in Just Like Heaven and Dirty Harry.

City Hall seen in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Milk.

The Painted Ladies. This street is famous from the opening credits of Full House, although the actual house that is shown in closeups as the “outside” of the house on the show is actually down the street.

(And me, squinting into the wind, to prove I was there!)
Quoted from Heidi’s blog: “The Graduate, George of the Jungle, Junior, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and So I Married an Axe Murderer all filmed here. Too Close for Comfort and, of course, Full House were set here. Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple once lived here (in real life!).”
We also saw the parents house from So I Married an Axe Murderer, but my photo didn’t turn out.

This is the Conservatory of Flowers. I can’t remember the film reference for this but I like how the photo turned out so I’m posting it anyway.

Then we went to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge where lots of movies have been filmed including Vertigo. Nice city views there!

We got to do a quick visit to George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic.

And of course the house from Mrs. Doubtfire.
We also saw lots of landmarks from movies like The Princess Dairies and Nine Months. And we saw Danielle Steel’s incredible house. It was such a fun tour!!
Then we headed out to Alcatraz, which was such an interesting experience. I found myself sympathizing with the inmates, imagining how terrible it would be to out on that rocky island, the freedom of the San Francisco skyline tantalizingly within reach. But of course, the inmates who came to Alcatraz were the worst of the worst criminals. They had to have not only committed serious crimes, but they had to have been uncooperative and unruly in other jails. So it’s not like they didn’t deserve to be punished. It was interesting on the audio tour to hear about some inmates who really turned their lives around after their time on Alcatraz.

When we got back to the city we did some shopping at Pier 39 (so touristy!) and got delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup at Boudin.
One more installment. Can’t fit anymore photos in this already epic post!!
Yay! A Travelogue from Emily! YAY!
