Love the felt heart garland I made with some of the other med school wives last week. So easy to do. We cut the hearts by hand and the whole thing took less than 2 hours to put together.

Since I wasn’t able to do any holiday decorating in NYC (all my decorations were in storage) it’s been more fun to get out my decorations here. I made the LOVE blocks the first year we were married from a kit from Pebbles in my Pocket. The blocks are totally uneven but I think they look nice. The frame was from the dollar spot at Target a few years ago. (Don’t mind the garland taped up with packing tape! I tried everything else and it kept falling down!)

A Valentine surprise in the mail from Mamacita. Thanks Mom, they’re yummy!

Heidi’s been here this weekend and I’ve loved having some company! Jacob has midterms this week so he’s been gone all day everyday studying. Having Heidi to hang out with made up for the fact that we won’t be celebrating Valentine’s Day until next week. Heidi and I did some shopping yesterday at the outlets and some other fun things. We’ve been on the hunt for some fabric for a project I’m cooking up for the baby’s room. I think I finally know what I want to do in there.

Hope you have a lovely weekend and holiday with your valentines!

Is that the cutest owl you’ve ever seen or what? It was my first needle felting project and I basically loved it, even though I stabbed myself at least 4 times. I got my kit from fancy tiger.

day 3 and winners

The winners of our Banana Split Math Facts Activity contest yesterday are Traci G and Nadine! Make room in your inboxes for some big attachments!

Spent a large portion of my day yesterday working on a project. Details soon, I hope.

Did you notice the stickers on my monitor? This tells you a few things about me. Number one: I love my label maker. Number two: I love Strongbad E-mails (hence the “Compy 386 sticker.) Number three: I’ve had this computer monitor since March 2006 when Kalie and I attended a bridal show. They gave me a sticker to wear that said “Bride to Be”. I was so excited that when I got home I stuck it on my computer monitor. Now everytime I go to take it off I remember how excited I was and I don’t have the heart to throw it away.

Happy Thursday!

day 2 and another giveaway

Heidi and I were busy with more etsy fun today. And fabric shopping for a fun project. And watching the Tudors. Don’t judge us. Henry Cavill and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, what are we supposed to do?

Lunch at Zubs. I could never drink soda again if it weren’t for Apple Beer.

Here’s the newest game in the shop, Terrific Teeth. This is one of my favs.

And we’re really excited about the Banana Split Math Facts activity. We both used this in our classrooms this year and it was a hit. Remember the banana split party on the last day of school? They earned it with this. This activity covers basic addition facts from 0+0 to 10+10.

This activity comes with tons of stuff: all the parts, the labels you need to organize, directions with pictures to help you get started, practice pages, and more! And the best part about this is it’s reusable. You can copy off the pieces and the record sheet again next year and you’re good to go. It’s the perfect activity for a parent helper who comes in weekly. My room mom did this every Monday and it was a good fit for all of us. My kids were really proud to put their finished banana splits into their portfolios at the end of the year.

This would also be a great activity to do at home, especially if you’re looking for a summer activity to keep your kids motivated. I would have loved this as a kid. Heidi and I both feel that memorizing basic math facts like these has huge benefits when it comes to bigger math problems later.

And because we love it so much we’re dying to share it with you! We are offering the Banana Split Math Facts activity set to 2 lucky blog readers! All you have to do is leave a comment before 9:00 PM MST Wednesday, June 4th. And be sure to see the rest of the pictures and read the entire explanation on the listing over at etsy.

How fun!

the one with second story window

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I am ecstatic to make this announcement. Finally, Heidi and I are ready to fill you in on one of our projects.

Introducing…..Second Story Window! Heidi and I are passionate about working with children. One of our favorite parts of teaching has been designing curriculum and resources. It’s been exciting for us to see a need in our classroom and design a resource that fills that need. I can’t tell you how fulfilling it is to see children enjoying your game or using the tools you created.

Second Story Window has actually been in the making for years. More particularly, I (and many other people) have been hounding Heidi for the last year to find out away to share the amazing activities she’s created. As her sister, I can brag and say that everyone I work with who has seen anything from her is blown away. They always assume it’s from a book. When they find out that Heidi made it they tell me she needs to sell them. We just didn’t know how to do it. Only a few weeks ago did we realize that Etsy would be perfect for us.

At the moment, the store has several games for teaching phonics and math skills. Again, I can brag because those resources were all created by Heidi. She has a special gift for creating games that will excite children about learning. Even my most struggling students loved Thursdays when we played her phonics games. They were learning so much without realizing it because they were enthralled in the game.

After much thought we decided to make our resources available to you as .pdf files. We opted to do this for several reasons, the most important being that it means we can get the resources to you faster. This is the way we would prefer to receive resources, so we hope that you will appreciate it too. Each game comes with instructions for turning the game into a file folder game if you choose. You can also store the boards and cards in page protectors. That’s how I store them at school.

Now most importantly we want you to know that these resources are not only created to be used in the classroom. They are designed to be used with children in any way possible. Personally, I used them in one on one tutoring as well and they were the preferred activities among the students I tutored. In addition, we think they would be a great resource for homeschoolers, and parents looking for a way to be more involved at home, whether that be for summer activities or extra practice activities during the school year.

We will be updating the shop with new resources often. You won’t believe how many games Heidi has made already that are waiting to be formatted and photographed. I’ll be sharing some resources very soon as well.

And just for fun we’re offering a giveaway! Check out Second Story Window (and you can get there from the mini on the right sidebar as well) and come back and tell us which game is your favorite. We’ll choose 2 winners (maybe more!) to receive the game of their choice (you can choose a different one than the one you post about here if you wish). Each game also comes with a page of directions and a skills page for practice. We will do the drawing tonight, June 2nd, at 9:00 PM MST.

Have I mentioned how incredibly excited we are??

P.S. Have to give a little shoutout to Kirsten for incredibly adorable banner. You rock Kirst! Check out her etsy shop, evapaul!
